Description

GNU Pinxen consists of a tool for the energy consumption analysis and optimisation of industrial processes. It is based on the pinch analysis, an extremely important methodology for the design of inherently energy-efficient plants.

Given a process involving heating or cooling requirements, the program delivers a complete report of the most efficient heat exchanger network (HEN) in terms of variable and fixed costs.

The synthesis of the optimal HEN system is performed by applying a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) optimisation technique. The application is being implemented in C and uses the General Model Algebraic System (GAMS).

GNU Pinxen is intended to work as:

·         an add-on or extension for the open source chemical process simulator Sim42.

·         a standalone web service that can be used directly from the internet browser.

The latest development version 0.14a is available from the download page. So far the linear programming (LP) and the mixed integer linear programming (MILP) steps have been completed, and only the last nonlinear programming (NLP) subroutine remains to be implemented.
